The 31th Annual Armadillo Roast was Sunday April 7, 2002 at Austin Cary Forest.
The winners of the annual pie contest are: Sharyn Jones O'Day (untempered), Gifford Waters (tempered), and Meggan Blessing and Gifford Waters (decorated).
This year's mystery meat was kangaroo.
This year's recipients of the Charles H. Fairbanks Award are: Keith Ashley, Brad Ensor, Andy Hemmings, and Sharyn Jones O'Day. Each will receive a cash award to be used to complete their dissertations.
Keith H. Ashley dissertation project is entitled "Interaction, Migration, and Politics: The Changing Social Landscape of Northern Florida and Southern Georgia (AD 900-1500)." Keith's research is directed by J.T. Milanich.
Bradley E. Ensor's dissertation research focuses on political developments within the Chontalpa region of Tabasco, México, during the Epiclassic period (AD 800-950). Brad's supervisory committee is chaired by William Keegan.
C. Andrew Hemmings, a student of Kenneth Sassaman, is working on a characterizations of early Paleoindian diet (Clovis) and technological organization. His research includes modeling subsistence and analyzing stone, bone, antler, and ivory tools.
Sharyn Jones O'Day's doctoral project "Ethnoarchaeology of Food, Hierarchy, and Gender Roles in the Lau Islands, Fiji," examines the role in relation to the cultural categories of hierarchy and gender. Her research is directed by Michael Heckenberger.
