Applying to the Graduate Program
We accept students only for fall terms and our application deadline is December 15. We review applications once a year for admission the following Fall. ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS MUST BE RECEIVED IN OUR OFFICE BY THAT DATE FOR YOUR APPLICATION TO BE CONSIDERED. If you wait until December 15 to apply, your application will NOT be complete by the deadline.
Our graduate program is a mentoring program emphasizing the PhD degree. Students are encouraged to develop their own research initiatives rather than follow a standard curriculum. We prefer to admit students who already have a Master's degree. Students who have other extraordinary qualifications in addition to the Bachelor's degree will also be considered, and may earn a Master’s degree before proceeding into the PhD program. We do not admit MA-only students.
Students are admitted to the program based on their intellectual match with faculty interests. Please contact several faculty members working in your areas of interest prior to application submission. Pages for each faculty member with their publications and areas of expertise are here (http://www.anthro.ufl.edu/faculty_list.shtml). Read some of their publications. When you contact them, explain your research interests and tell about your education and training. Ask if they are accepting students and what projects they are planning. They can tell you how your experience fits with our program, and can suggest ways you can strengthen your application. We have a large number of applicants every year, and it is generally helpful for the faculty to have had contact with prospective students before applications are received. Our faculty enjoy hearing from potential students.
